10 Days: Transylvania and Maramures

Ten days in the heart of Romania: Brasov, Bran, Viscri, Sighisoara, Sibiu, Alba Iulia, Cluj, Turda Gorge, then the villages and wooden churches of Maramures.

About this route

This ten-day route combines the two regions that define Romania in travellers' imagination: medieval Transylvania and rural Maramures. The first part follows the Saxon towns — Brasov with its Council Square and Tampa Mountain, Bran Castle, the fortified church of Viscri, the citadel of Sighisoara and Sibiu with its Bridge of Lies. It continues to the Alba Carolina fortress and Corvin Castle, then on to Cluj via Turda Salt Mine, with a day set aside for hiking in Turda Gorge, one of the most spectacular nature reserves in the country. The final three days belong to Maramures, where time flows differently: the Merry Cemetery of Sapanta with its painted crosses and humorous epitaphs, the Maramures Village Museum in Sighetu Marmatiei, Barsana Monastery with its soaring wooden towers, and finally a ride on the Mocanita steam train up the Vaser Valley — the last forestry steam railway in Europe. A slower, deeper route than the classic circuits, ideal for a second visit to Romania or for anyone who wants to see the authentic country.
