Banat is Romania's most multicultural region, a mosaic of peoples and traditions with Timișoara at its center — a city that made history in 1989 and shone as the European Capital of Culture 2023. Covering an area of ~28,500 km² and home to approximately 600,000 inhabitants (Romanians, Serbs, Germans, Hungarians, Czechs, Bulgarians), Banat offers a unique cultural and gastronomic diversity in Romania. From the imperial architecture of the cities to the wild nature of the Nera Gorges and the mystery of the Danube Gorge, tourism in Banat is a pleasant surprise at every step.
Timișoara (320,000 inhabitants) is the most cosmopolitan city in western Romania and the first European city with public electric lighting (1884). Unirii Square, surrounded by colorful baroque buildings, the Metropolitan Cathedral (1946, neo-Byzantine style, iconic green domes — symbol of the city) and Victory Square — where the December 1989 Revolution began — are central landmarks. The generous parks (Rose Park with 1,200 varieties, Central Park, Botanical Park), independent art scenes, and vibrant café life make Timișoara a top urban destination in 2026.
Băile Herculane, located in a spectacular gorge of the Cerna, has a thermal history of over 2,000 years — the Romans called it “Ad Aquas Herculi Sacras” (The Sacred Waters of Hercules). The thermal waters with healing properties (sulfurous, radioactive, temperature 38–60°C), the Neptun Baths in Austro-Hungarian imperial style, and the natural setting with ancient beech forests make Herculane a unique destination. The restoration project of the Casino and historic hotels, launched in 2023, promises to restore Herculane to its former glory.
Nera-Beușnița Gorges, the longest gorge in Romania (over 22 km), is a paradise for hiking and nature photography. The Beușnița Waterfalls, with their turquoise waters flowing over moss-covered travertine steps, are among the most photographed places in Romania. Ochiul Beiului Lake, with its crystal-clear deep blue waters that never freeze (constant temperature ~5°C), is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe.
Danube Gorge, the longest in Europe (144 km), offers extraordinary panoramas. Great and Small Cauldrons, where the Danube narrows from 2 km to just 150 m between 300 m high rock walls, are a geological masterpiece. Decebal's Face, carved in rock on the Danube's bank — the tallest rock sculpture in Europe (55 m high, 25 m wide) — is an impressive attraction visible from the water or the Serbian shore.
The Banat cuisine is a genuine culinary melting pot, influenced by Serbian, German, Hungarian, and Romanian cuisines. Don't miss: fish soup cooked in a cauldron (on the Danube's shore, with carp and pike), poppy seed and sour cherry strudel (German influence), Banat goulash with dumplings, Serbian stuffed cabbage (larger, in vine leaves) and cevapcici. Wines from Recaș, one of the largest and most awarded wineries in Romania, are internationally appreciated — especially Sole, Cuvee, and the Sanziana series.
