Ponoarele Cave

Ponoarele Cave, located in Mehedinți County, is a natural attraction worth exploring. This cave, situated at the edge of the village of Ponoarele, is renowned for its unique karst formations and diverse ecosystem. Inside, visitors can observe impressive stalactites and stalagmites, as well as a variety of bat species that make their home here.

Access to the cave is easy from Dealu Mare, and the road is well marked. Once you arrive, you will be greeted by a remarkable natural landscape, where the sound of flowing water complements the tranquil atmosphere. The cave is approximately 1,200 meters long, but only part of it is open to the public. It is advisable to bring a flashlight to explore the darker areas.

Additionally, nearby there are various hiking trails leading to the surrounding hills, offering panoramic views of the Oltenia region. In the area, you can also find several guesthouses serving traditional dishes, such as polenta with cheese or sarmale. These local delicacies can be enjoyed after a day of exploring the cave.
